Position Overview

The Iyamu lab in Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy at The University of Kansas is currently seeking two talented and motivated postdoctoral researchers interested in developing chemical probes to elucidate cellular processes that drive cancer and other diseases. The successful candidate will participate in the research projects currently underway in the Iyamu lab including, but not limited to, developing chemical probes for biological targets involved in protein methylation and/or acetylation, biochemical assay development, roles of inhibitors in cancer biology and neurodegenerative diseases.  We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual with in-depth knowledge and extensive skills in medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, and chemical biology.

Position is limited term with a typical duration of 1-5 years.  Individuals who have served as a postdoctoral fellow/researcher for up to five years in the same area of research are not eligible.

  • Responsible for performance of laboratory research to develop chemical probes to elucidate cellular processes that drive cancer and other diseases.
  • Establish and maintain laboratory experiments using organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology skills.  Specific duties may involve (1) organic synthesis, (2) biochemical assay, (3) cell culture, (4) development of biochemical assays, (5) chemical biology.

  • Maintain certain laboratory equipment and record keeping.  Train other lab personnel on the proper use and care of specialized equipment, provide general assistance to other lab personnel.  Oversee daily operations of research setting.

  • Literature searches and analysis of published data.  Generation and review of experimental documentation including report generation, daily recording of experimental procedures and results generated by the individual in laboratory notebooks, as well as editing and preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.

  • Assure compliance with safety programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

NOTE:  To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand.  Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed six months.  Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.


Required Qualifications

  • PhD in the areas of Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field.
  • Experience with organic synthesis, biochemical assays, and mass spectrometry, as demonstrated by research summary and/or publications.
  • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated in CV, research summary and publications.

  • Expertise in organic and medicinal chemistry.
  • Experience in running enzymatic assays and assay development.
  • Experience with cell culture and cellular experiments.
  • General laboratory and management organizational skills.
  • Experience working independently as well as with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to multitask as demonstrated by application materials and interview.
  •  Evidence of willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Experience with manuscript preparation and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
