Position Overview

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kansas is currently accepting applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher. The preferred start date will be between 12/01/2021 and 01/03/2022. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work on the development of data-driven and reduced-order model (ROM) for aerospace propulsion applications under the supervision of Dr. Cheng Huang.

Applications for postdoctoral researchers will be reviewed for consideration for a one-year research position (with possible extension based on performance and funding availability). Ideal candidates are expected to have in-depth expertise in one or more of the areas below:

  • Data-driven and Reduced-Order Modeling
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Computational Modeling of Turbulent Reacting Flows

  • Job Description

45% Develop Reduced-Order Modeling framework and methodology for accurate and efficient predictions of combustion dynamics in aerospace propulsion applications.

40% Conduct CFD simulations of combustion dynamics in aerospace propulsion applications, including 1) CFD code development; and 2) model improvement.

10%  Assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate research assistants.

5% Help develop externally funded research programs.

    Position Requirements

On-site work required at University of Kansas Lawrence Campus

    Required Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated on the candidate’s research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) a resume and cover letter, (ii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iii) references, and (iv) interview.

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated coding skills with programming languages like Fortran, C, and C++
  • Note:

To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the Ph.D. conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree, the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Substantial experience working with CFD of turbulent reacting flow and data-driven modeling methods.
  • Experience in mentoring other researchers (typically at the undergraduate or master’s level)
  • Novel research proposal development, presentation, and execution, including evaluating and summarizing the state-of-the-art in a particular area.

  • Additional Candidate Instruction

Only complete application packages submitted online will be considered. A complete application includes online application form, resume, cover letter, names, and contact information for three professional references.
