Position Overview

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas seeks to fill one postdoctoral researcher position in observational astronomy, working in the group of Professor Allison Kirkpatrick.

Length of Appointment: Initial appointment is for two years.

GENERAL DUTIES: The postdoc will be responsible for reducing new JWST/MIRI observations, producing science-ready images, and producing a photometric catalog. The postdoc will also assist with mentoring undergraduate students.


Job Description

Download JWST/MIRI raw images and run through the JWST pipeline. Collaborate with experienced team members to use the best calibrations. Produce science-ready images that will be distributed to the CEERS team. Run SExtractor to create a photometric catalog. Cross-match the photometric catalog with existing team catalogs.  Assist with training undergraduate and graduate students in research area.

50%  Research will include MIRI data reduction and catalog creation.
40%  Postdoc may pursue their own research, and is especially encouraged to use the new JWST/MIRI observations.
10%  Assist the faculty in guiding the group's graduate and undergraduate students.


Position Requirements

Work location:
Can be on the Lawrence, KS Campus in Malott Hall
OR
Can be a fully remote location in the United States.  Position cannot be located internationally.


Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in astronomy or physics or a related field by date of appointment
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed 6-months.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reducing data from the James Webb Space Telescope.
