Position Overview

The Center for the Advancement of Research on Eating Behaviors (CARE) Laboratory has an opening for 1-2 Post-Doctoral Fellows with an anticipated start date in 2021 or 2022. Fellows will receive mentorship from Dr. Kelsie Forbush, with opportunities for co-mentorship from Dr. Sara Gould (Director of the Eating Disorder Center at Children’s Mercy – Kansas City). These two-year positions will emphasize clinical research. Post-doctoral Fellows will access to outstanding research resources, newly renovated facilities, expert co-mentorship from several faculty conducting research on unhealthy eating behaviors, statistical mentorship, and access to m-Health development technology to facilitate progress toward a future academic or industry career. Supplementing research opportunities, clinical opportunities include: providing on-campus and community-based outreach and training for eating disorders diagnosis and assessment; providing telehealth treatment using Guided Self-Help Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT-gsh) as a part of an ongoing research study; conducting clinical assessments for a large federally funded research studies; and building mentorship skills by co-supervising PhD student assessments, therapy, and clinical research projects. Beyond building contact hours for future licensure, there will be ample opportunities for independent and mentored research. The CARE Laboratory has several large existing datasets, including (but not limited to) a dataset of over 30,000 patients with eating disorders in collaboration with Recovery Record, Inc., an ongoing large-scale RCT of college students with an eating disorder, an ongoing study of over 350 community-recruited adults with eating disorders, and two nationally representative samples of veterans. Finally, our center has close relationships with numerous local and national eating-disorder treatment centers, including Children’s Mercy – Kansas City and Eating Recovery Center, making this an ideal setting for fellows who wish to establish an independent clinical-research career. This position will require relocation to Lawrence, Kansas.


Job Description

The percent effort for duties can be adjusted based on the Post-Doctoral Fellow’s career objectives, in collaboration with Drs. Forbush and Gould.

40% Independent Research:

  • Write and submit manuscripts based on existing and ongoing data collected in the laboratory.
  • Conduct data collection for independent or pilot research study.
  • Write internal and extramural research grants (e.g., T32, F32, K01 applications).
30% Direct Clinical-Research Service Provision:
  • Test participants to determine mental-health diagnoses and conduct intake interviews.
  • Conduct protocol-based psychotherapy for research participants with eating disorders.
  • Review other team members’ data collection to ensure accuracy and validity on an ongoing basis.
20% Supervision, Management & Support:
  • Oversee and assist with the creation of a novel m-Health app to be used to support teenagers stepping down from intensive treatment from anorexia nervosa and their therapist.
  • Aid with the preparation of IRB and federal and private foundation grant applications.
  • Assist the laboratory director with manuscript preparation.
  • Train and evaluate the student members of the laboratory to ensure adherence to the laboratory protocols.
  • Review student therapy sessions and rate for study compliance with the research protocol.
  • Coordinate among project coordinators, on-site researchers, and off-site research partners to schedule meetings, keep meeting notes, and manage the team to facilitate progress toward team goals for several large-scale and pilot studies.
  • Co-lead or lead assessment and therapy group-based supervision for PhD students.
10% Statistical Analysis:
  • Perform statistical analyses, as needed, using SPSS, SAS, Mplus, or R.
  • Provide oversight on statistical analyses conducted by other members of the laboratory.
  • Oversee data management and study flow through the protocols using RedCap.

Position Requirements

  • The position will be hybrid to start and will transition to fully on-site.

  • Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in psychology or neuroscience by the start date.
  • APA or PCSAS accredited internship completed by the start date.
  • Clinical experience that includes therapy and assessment work with patients who have mental illness as evidenced by application materials.
  • At least one publication in the field of eating disorders or obesity as evidenced by application materials.
  • NOTE:

    To be appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work to a deadline.
  • Experience or prior training in the administration of structured clinical interviews.
  • Prior training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy or other empirically supported therapies for eating disorders.
  • Experience in laboratory management or administration.
  • Advanced statistical understanding with demonstrated ability to apply analytical methods to large datasets.
  • Proficient computer knowledge to interface with a variety of database, statistical, and imaging task and processing software, such as SPSS, SAS, R, Qualtrics, Linux, AFNI.
