Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to support multidisciplinary research on next generation inspection and monitoring of large-scale concrete dam infrastructures using robotics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. Highly qualified candidates with any of the following backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply:

  •  Computer vision driven structural health monitoring 
  • Drone-based multimodal data collections and modeling for digital twining
  • Semi-supervised and unsupervised machine/deep learning for damage mapping and quantification
  • Automated data generation through 3D computer graphics and Generative AI
  • This is a 1-year appointment with the possibility of reappointment based on performance and funding availability. The preferred start will be in August 2024 or earlier. This position involves working closely with faculty members and students on high-profile research projects related to autonomous inspection, damage detection, and quantification in large-scale concrete structures.


    Job Description

    80% - Research

    • Conduct and oversee computational, laboratory, and field research.
    • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students with their research.
    • Train students on proper procedures and safety regulations for the laboratory.
    • Analyze data associated with conducted research.
    20% - Reporting and Dissemination of Research
    • Prepare and present updates on ongoing research.
    • Provide written reports on research progress.
    • Participate in group meetings and present seminars to the scientific community.
    • Publish journal and conference papers to disseminate results.

    Position Requirements

    • Postdoctoral Research Associates must be able to relocate to Lawrence, KS, and work on-site at the University of Kansas.
    • Some out-of-state travel may be required to conduct fieldwork as necessary; travel is anticipated to be less than four weeks per year.

    Required Qualifications

    Candidates will be evaluated on their research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) CV and cover letter, (ii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iii) references, and (iv) interview by videoconference.

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. 
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the Ph.D. conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with computer vision and related applications in structural health monitoring. 
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, such as supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised machine learning and deep learning, and its applications in civil engineering.
  • Experience with Generative AI and its applications in civil engineering.
  • Experience with 3D computer graphics and modeling and its applications in civil engineering.
  • Experience with drone operations and ability to acquire a Part 107 FAA drone license. 
  • Excellent record of publications and technical presentations.
