Organization Overview

The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is an X-ray light source used by visiting researchers around the world, spanning industry, academia, and government, to advance our knowledge in a wide range of scientific disciplines such as life sciences, quantum materials, energy storage, advanced materials science, physics, chemistry, and biology. From batteries and microelectronics to drug design and future quantum computers, NSLS-II enables its growing research community to study materials with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing cutting-edge capabilities.

Data Science & System Integration (DSSI) is a growing program of about 50 people within NSLS-II with a mission to use modern hardware and software to squeeze the greatest scientific impact out of each X-ray photon. DSSI expertise spans a large technical area, from detector development and low-level hardware integration through scientific library development, development and deployment of instrument controls and data services, web and desktop application development, and scientific data process and analysis.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The DSSI of NSLS-II is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our dynamic research team. This position focuses on the development and application of cutting-edge AI and Machine Learning techniques for data reconstruction in the field of Tensor Tomography.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with world-class researchers at the HEX beamline of NSLS-II, Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Purdue University, contributing to groundbreaking research with real-world impact.

BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Implement and develop data acquisition techniques for tensor tomography.

* Develop and refine cutting-edge AI/ML algorithms specifically tailored for Tensor Tomography.

* Analyze data from experimental setups to derive insights, compare with theoretical models, and validate the AI/ML models.

* Write and publish research papers in high-impact journals detailing the results and methodologies developed during research.

* Collaborate closely with researchers at the HEX beamline of NSLS-II, Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Purdue University.

* Engage in interdisciplinary research efforts, ensuring consistent and open communication between project collaborators.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field.

* Demonstrated skills in programming with Python.

* Strong interest in working on AI/ML techniques.

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.

* Self-motivated and able to work in a team environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Familiarity with current algorithms, platforms, and tools used in the AI and ML domains, especially as they relate to image reconstruction.

* Knowledge of synchrotron X-ray imaging, especially tomography.

* Experience in programming with TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch.

* Experience in contributing to community-led open-source software projects.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework) at the discretion of the manager/dept chair.

BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
