General Description

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title:

Design and Development of a Tabletop Electrostatic force balance.

The work will entail:

The successful applicant will join a select team of researchers developing the tabletop instrument in collaboration with the US DOD, an electrostatic force balance to directly realize mass at the milligram level (uncertainty of 1 x 10-3 ) to the gram level (uncertainty  1 x 10-4 ) ultimately traceable to the Planck constant. Specifically, this next generation machine will be built using a flexure mechanism and inherently also have electrostatic force capabilities.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Design and simulate electromagnetic and electrostatic actuators
  • Design software/hardware interfacing via LabVIEW and FPGA
  • Build closed loop control systems
  • Construct synchronous data taking schemes for sampling high speed laser interferometers
  • Collect and analyze metrology data
  • Troubleshoot and test devices
  • Present results at conferences and journal publications

Qualifications

§  A PhD degree in physics

§  2 years experience designing metrology-grade laboratory instrumentation

§  Experience with realtime control systems

§  Experience with nanometer-scale positioning systems

§  Experience with technical communication in the form of writing journal publications
