Postdoctoral Researcher in Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy of Chemical Dynamics

Updated: about 2 months ago
Location: Berkeley, CALIFORNIA

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Chemical Sciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy Studies of Chemical Dynamics to join the AMOS Chemical Dynamics group. The group’s research focuses on studying ultrafast dynamics in molecules, clusters, and interfacial systems by means of time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy and imaging techniques. See https://gessnerresearchgroup.lbl.gov/publications for a list of recent publications.

In this role, you will study ultrafast coupled electronic-structural dynamics in gas phase molecules by means of high-order harmonics enabled femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Further activities may include experimental campaigns at X Ray free electron lasers (X-FELs), synchrotron radiation light sources, and Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) facilities, using a variety of imaging and spectroscopy techniques and targeting a variety of topics ranging from unimolecular reaction dynamics to photoinduced interfacial charge transfer. The successful candidate has either recently received or is about to acquire a PhD in physics or chemistry. The candidate is expected to conduct cutting-edge femtosecond laser experiments, develop and apply software-based data evaluation tools, derive theoretical interpretations, and draft manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as contributions to research proposals and reports to funding agencies. A high degree of self-motivation must be complemented by the capability to thrive in a collaborative group environment.

What You Will Do:

  • Conceive, conduct, analyze, and interpret ultrafast transient X-ray absorption experiments on gas phase molecules employing femtosecond lasers and high-order harmonic generation.
  • Draft manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Draft contributions to research proposals and reports to funding agencies.
  • Present scientific findings at national and international scientific meetings.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Physics or Chemistry.
  • Strong background and documented track record in experimental chemical physics or physical chemistry.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with femtosecond lasers, ultrafast spectroscopy, and high vacuum techniques.
  • Substantial hands-on expertise creating and applying software tools for scientific data analysis.
  • Experience authoring manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Capability to work independently within a collaborative group environment.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Postdoctoral Fellow positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience. This position has a targeted monthly salary range of $5,374 - $6,444 and is expected to start at $5,374 or above.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at:Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
