The University of Denver is a medium-size (12,000 students) private university located in a thriving metropolis at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (http://chemistry.du.edu ) offers undergraduate degrees (B.A. and B.S.) in chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry and graduate degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.) with specialization in analytical, biophysical, environmental, and organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in Dr. Andrei Kutateladze's lab. The position will be involved in the synthesis of novel compounds, their photochemical properties, analysis of structure, and combinatorial synthesis. Will also be responsible for assigned lab duties as well as supervising undergraduate and graduate students.

This position is a 2-year appointment, renewal is contingent upon availability of funds and performance.

Essential Functions

  • Work with other members of the research group and visitors to the laboratory to coordinate the concerted effort in this general direction.
  • Attend weekly research group meetings and other functions designed to exchange information and improve understanding of subjects of research.
  • Responsible for a set of choirs in the lab, designed to facilitate research work. Examples include but not limited to ordering chemicals from commercial sources, maintaining instruments, refilling liquid nitrogen for NMR, overseeing safety, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Language Skills:
The successful candidate must be proficient in spoken and written English in order to communicate with members of the research group and to contribute to written reports on the work performed. The candidate must have the ability to keep an accurate and coherent laboratory notebook.

Mathematical Skills:
at the Organic chemistry PhD level; Computer skills must be sufficient to work with locally-written and commercial software for data acquisition and interpretation and also quantum mechanical software for computing molecular properties. Quantitative skills much be sufficient to logically analyze experimental data.

Reasoning Ability:
PhD-level reasoning - reasoning skills must be sufficient to plan synthetic work and interpret the results, including interpret the spectra.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Organic Chemistry.
  • Organic Synthesis.
  • Modern synthetic reagents, ability to operate analytical instrumentation NMR, MALDI-TOF, GCMS, Rayonet, UV-Vis, IR etc.
  • Previous postdoctoral experience after PhD.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Synthetic Chemistry and Diversity-Oriented Synthesis; synthesis of heterocycles; Photochemistry.
  • Computer skills, Unix skills.
  • 5 years of postdoctoral experience after PhD.

Work Schedule
This position will work 37.5 hours per week with additional hours/evenings/weekends as needed.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 5.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $38,000 - $40,000.
