A funded Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is available to perform NIH-funded research on the biology of immune-mediated kidney diseases in humans and mouse models. The successful candidate will develop their research in the Laboratory of Dr. Ali Gharavi, Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Steers and Dr. Ali Gharavi. (https://columbiamedicine.org/divisions/gharavi/ )
Research focuses on the genetics and immunology of kidney diseases, including IgA Nephropathy (PMID: 33462085, PMID: 28187132), HIV associated nephropathy (PMID: 34893534), C3 glomerulopathy (PMID: 33941608) and kidney transplant rejection (PMID: 31091373). Particularly, the team investigates the mechanisms of the development and activation of the immune response in kidney disease, and mechanisms of immune mediated kidney damage. Current projects in the lab include i) studying the development, homing, and maintenance of IgA+ B-cells in wild type and genetically modified mice to elucidate mechanisms of elevated IgA in IgA nephropathy patients. ii) HIV associated nephropathy understanding mechanisms of kidney dysfunction in the setting of inflammation. The lab applies technologies such as transgenic mouse models, human genetics, single cell/nuclei RNA sequencing, whole genome sequencing, CRISPR screening of cell lines, cell biology and molecular biology techniques, multiparameter flow cytometry to study these important questions. By the completion of the project(s), the post-doctoral scientist will become proficient in genetic and immunological studies in humans and mouse models.
The qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. in a relevant field such as immunology, genetics, or molecular biology. Priority will be given to candidates who have mastered the following basic research experimental skills including cell culture, mouse handling, flow cytometry, next generation sequencing and bioinformatics. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, advanced organizational skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently. Postdoctoral scientists will have support from the principal investigator, senior investigators and the department to build up their own career path, e.g. grant writing, networking/presentation in conferences, and publishing.
Job Duties: Work with the PI and senior scientists on developing hypothesis and designing experiments. Conduct laboratory experiments including animal studies, multiparameter flow cytometry, preparation of samples for single cell sequencing and single cell sequencing analysis, isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and in vitro cell culture experiments. Collaborate with lab members, division members and bioinformaticians in experiments and data analysis. Presentation of data at lab meetings. Participates in analysis of data, preparation on manuscripts and conference presentations. Help in the training and supervision of laboratory technicians and students. Submitting applications for fellowships. Participates in laboratory meetings, divisional journal club and grand rounds and institutional research symposiums.
Salary Range: $61,500-$75,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
