Yale University – Institute of Sacred Music: Postdoctoral Associate – Anthropology of Religion

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music, an interdisciplinary graduate center for the study and practice of sacred music, worship, and the arts, invites applications for a post-doctoral associate position in the anthropology of religion with a special emphasis on ritual practice and theory and its associated sensorial cultures. Alongside conducting their own research, the successful candidate would be offering one or two courses each year and student advising, participation in ISM academic gatherings, especially with the ISM Fellows, and other service.

Candidates must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in anthropology, religious studies, or another relevant discipline. Candidates are eligible to apply as post-doctoral associates if they have fewer than six years of related experience following the terminal degree and are not yet employed as full-time regular faculty. The candidate’s research statement must coincide with the aims of this position, and they should also have strong potential as an instructor. The position is appointed for a one-year term renewable twice on completion of a successful review.

The application should contain a C.V.; 1400-word research statement; research statement abstract; sample of scholarly work; and 1-3 course proposals that include course title, course description, and weekly lecture topics. The applicant will also need three letters of recommendation and be prepared to provide email contacts for recommenders when applying.

Applications for this position should be submitted through the ISM Fellows application portal, which can be found at https://fellows.ism.yale.edu/apply. The search committee will begin to read applications in mid-February. The anticipated start date for the fellowship is July 1, 2024. In addition to a competitive stipend, fellows receive research funds and relocation costs. More information about fellowships at the ISM can be found at https://ism.yale.edu/ism-fellows. Any questions about the position or application process can be sent to [email protected].

Yale University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer. Yale values diversity among its students, staff, and faculty and strongly welcomes applications from women, persons with disabilities, protected veterans, and underrepresented minorities.
