Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The George Mason University Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a post-doctoral research associate position to work with staff scientists on-site at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C.  George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Position Description:

The candidate shall conduct research into the structure and dynamics of the solar wind by comparing the results from data-driven numerical models of the inner heliosphere with both remote sensing and in situ observations. Observations of interest include those from Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, Hinode, STEREO, and ACE. Specific examples of projects to be pursued include (1) modeling the connectivity of in situ observations to the solar surface and understanding the plasma properties of the source regions of the solar wind, (2) quantifying the impact of assimilating far side information into the magnetic boundary conditions of the numerical simulations on forecasts of the solar wind properties at earth. The work for this position is to be performed on-site at NRL in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:

The candidate shall provide expertise in the analysis of solar observations using the Python programming language. The candidate will be responsible for writing Python scripts that run numerical simulations of the inner heliosphere and display the results. The candidate will present the results of this research orally at scientific and technical meetings and will develop manuscripts for publication in scientific-technical journals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics or space physics;
  • A minimum of three years postdoctoral experience in solar data analysis;
  • Demonstrated record of publications in the refereed scientific literature;
  • Expertise in the analysis of solar data and experience in analyzing and modeling data from solar images;
  • Extensive experience with the Python and IDL programming languages, object-oriented programming techniques, and version control software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analyzing in situ solar wind composition and plasma properties and how to extract information about physical processes occurring in the solar corona;
  • Experience in studying the mechanisms that heat and accelerate solar plasmas and particles;
  • Expertise in data analysis, including the processing and validation of spacecraft data as well as the development of automated analysis algorithms.
