Location: Dover, DELAWARE

General Description of the Position

A postdoctoral research fellow position is available at the DOD funded Center of Excellence in Advanced Quantum Sensing at Delaware State University with a focus on conducting cold-atom experiments for quantum sensing applications. The project aims to conduct cold-atom Raman clock and magnetometry experiments with a goal towards realizing enhanced sensitivity via spin squeezing. The successful candidate will design Ramsey microwave and Ramsey CPT clock experiments in cold atom-based systems and implement spin-squeezing protocols in atomic clock and magnetometry. Additionally, the person will be responsible for purchasing and maintaining various equipment in the laboratory, assist in report writing, teach substitute lectures/laboratory sessions of classes, and provide training and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students working on the project. The position is funded for two years.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  • Design, develop and conduct experiments on cold atom-based Raman clock and magnetometry. This involves developing and operating cold-atom systems, atomic clock development using Ramsey techniques, magnetometry using synchronous coherent population trapping, and developing experimental platforms for implementing spin squeezing protocols in atomic clock and magnetometry.
  • Prepare technical reports and write manuscripts for publication.
  • Purchase research supplies and equipment for project related experiments and maintain various equipment in the laboratory.
  • Teach substitute lectures and/or teach undergraduate laboratory sessions for classes and assist in project report writing as part of postdoc mentoring by advisor.
  • Provide training, mentoring and technical guidance to undergraduate and graduate students working on the project.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should have a PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline with working experience in laser cooling and trapping, experimental and theoretical background in atomic and optical physics, experimental skills in working with lasers, optics, and electronics, and knowledge in computer interfacing, data acquisition and programming using python, MATLAB and/or LabVIEW.

    Qualification Standards

Education: Doctoral degree in in Physics, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline

    Performance Standards & EEO Statement

The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Experience in laser cooling and trapping, experimental and theoretical background in atomic and optical physics, and experimental skills in working with lasers, optics, and electronics
