Location: Dover, DELAWARE
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

General Description of the Position

THIS IS A 100% GRANT FUNDED POSITION

The Functional Nanoporous Material group in the Department of Chemistry at Delaware State University is running a research program on the design, synthesis and engineering of chemical sensors for water quality monitoring and ion detection. The aim of the research is to design, develop and optimize membranes for ion selective electrodes and sensor devices to detect of anions in fresh water and/or sea water.

The Group is currently seeking a highly experienced, highly motivated, self-driven and creative postdoctoral research fellow to augment the team. At present, we seek a postdoctoral researcher with the following qualifications:

Strong background in material science or chemistry of materials relevant for chemical sensing applications. Experience in correlating material properties (phase purity, porosity, crystallinity, composition, film morphology, interfaces) with small organic molecule synthesis will be positively evaluated. Direct or indirect expertise with theoretical simulations is considered a plus. Experience in field work for water sample collection will also be positively assessed. The successful applicant should have experience with the potentiometric method for ion detection and be familiar in the preparation of setup for optical and electrochemical characterization. The successful candidate is expected to have a valid driver license and is adaptable to work both in the field and lab environments.

Interested candidates must apply online for full consideration. All applicants are required to clearly indicate the position for which they are applying in the title of applications. Applications should include (1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae with a list of research paper publications, (3) contact information of three references from which recommendations can be requested. All these components are required to be placed in a single pdf file, submitted to the online application system and also emailed to Dr. Yanfeng Yue at [email protected]

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Design, plan, and carry out experiments under PI supervision to synthesize ion-selective membranes, fabricate electrodes and characterize sensor devices for ion detection based on potentiometric method.
  • Perform standard organic synthesis, separation, and characterization.
  • Document and analyze experimental results and present results in laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, and scientific conferences.
  • Prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data and drafts of materials for grant proposals.
  • Work closely with other lab members to ensure projects are being completed according to the research plan and in organizing laboratory space and supplies.
  • Work with collaborators and travel to other research institutions for research related activities.

  • Qualification Standards

The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years research experience (Ph.D. or MSc. research experiences are inclusive)
  • Minimum of 1 peer reviewed research publication
  • Minimum of 2 research conference presentation experience

  • Performance Standards & EEO Statement

The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Demonstrated commitment to and proficiency in research, teaching, and service as discussed with the department chair upon hire.
