Position Summary
The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (CoV2) emerged in December of 2019 and has infected over 178 million people worldwide, with nearly 20% of the cases occurring in the U.S. The associated coronavirus disease (termed COVID-19) varies substantially; some infected individuals are apparently asymptomatic, whereas others experience significant morbidity and mortality. Current data suggest that differences in clinical outcome are dictated by disparities in the host response to infection. One of the most profound host responses in COVID-19 is a coagulopathy characterized by high circulating fibrinogen, D-dimer, and rates of thrombosis. Post-mortem analyses revealed patients with fatal COVID-19 also have substantial extravascular fibrin deposits in the alveolar space. The long-term goal of our research program is to define the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking coagulation and fibrinolytic proteins to the transition from mild disease to severe, debilitating, and deadly COVID-19.

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the highly collaborative Wolberg and Flick research laboratories within the UNC Blood Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Individuals with experience in infectious disease, immunology, or coagulation pathogenesis and interest in interdisciplinary work to drive understanding in this exciting new frontier are encouraged to apply. Work will center on the use of a mouse-adapted SARs-CoV-2 virus in genetic mouse models with coagulation/fibrinolytic factor deficiencies or functional alterations to characterize virus infection, host responses and changes in clinical coagulation readouts.
Further department activities beyond Dr. Flick’s and Dr. Wolberg’s lab:
The three coequal missions of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are to: 1) provide exceptional, comprehensive, clinically effective and cost effective pathology and laboratory medicine services to UNC HealthCare patients; 2) teach clinical and scientific concepts of pathology and laboratory medicine, and mechanisms of disease to a wide variety of learners, including medical students, postdoctoral residents, MD fellows, PhD graduate students, and undergraduate students; and 3) advance the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine, and the knowledge of diseases and disease mechanisms through innovative research spanning the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical.
The Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine performs anatomic and clinical diagnostic tests on both an inpatient and an outpatient basis, and performs autopsies, when requested by clinicians. The Department has a MD Residency Training Program in the Office of Graduate Medical Education. In the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department is responsible for the teaching of undergraduate level courses. In the Graduate School, the department has a graduate program in experimental pathology which offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
This department is devoted to research in many diverse areas of expertise. Many of the research initiatives are nationally and internationally known, and the Chair is dedicated to further expansion of the breadth of the research endeavors. Most research is wholly managed and funded by contracts and grants within the Department.
