The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is one of seven academic departments in Carnegie Institute of Technology, the engineering college at Carnegie Mellon. MSE has a long and distinguished tradition in materials education and research, and today our faculty continue to address the more important and challenging issues at the forefront of science and technology. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary activity that applies the principles of basic sciences and engineering to understanding the behavior of materials, their development and applications. Both our undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to this interdisciplinary approach.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for Professor Bryan Webler's research team. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a niche field, process, or subject area and may involve organizing and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. The purpose of this role is to acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of his or her choosing.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Characterizing of reaction products using scanning electron microscopy, light optical microscopy, and/or x-ray diffraction

  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.

  • Conduct research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.

  • Coordinating use of laboratory equipment

  • Developing research hypotheses and testing plans

  • Keeping accurate records and documenting results

  • Safely conducting high temperature experiments using resistance furnaces, induction furnaces, and/or confocal laser scanning microscopy

  • Training and supervising graduate and undergraduate students

  • Other duties as assigned

You must demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and reasoning skills required

  • Strong organization and communication skills required

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Degree in a related field required
