Summary of Duties:

The Gang Lab in Washington State University’s Institute for Biological Chemistry seeks a postdoctoral researcher to take the lead in understanding the uptake of pesticides from contaminated soils by Cannabis sativa plants and their subsequent distribution within the plant. This project is funded by the Washington State Department of Ecology in response to the discovery of residues of DDT and its breakdown products DDE and DDD in field soils used to grow C. sativa plants after products derived from those plants were shown to contain small levels of these pesticides. The postdoctoral researcher will perform growth chamber and greenhouse experiments associated with the project activities in Pullman, WA, working closely with IBC greenhouse staff. This individual will also work with staff members in WSU’s Tissue Imaging, Metabolomics and Proteomics Laboratory and a commercial partner lab to perform chemical analysis for DDT/DDE/DDD measurement for the soil and plant samples collected for the project with assistance from undergraduate student workers. The position will use interdisciplinary approaches to understand the timing, distribution and mechanisms of pesticide uptake by C. sativa . (hemp).

The position is initially available for one year, with additional appointment periods dependent on satisfactory progress and availability of continued funding. Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a biological science, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Skillsets that will be utilized and developed include analytical/medicinal chemistry, metabolomics, and data analytics with R and Genstat, plant physiology, and mass spectrometry imaging.

  • The competitive candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills with an ability to work in teams and mentor junior scientists.

Annual Salary:

$50,000.00 - $75,000.00 | Commensurate upon qualifications and experience



In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
