POSITION DESCRIPTION

The CFN is seeking an exceptional Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct novel research exploring vapor-phase synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid thin films and their applications as next-generation extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) photoresists. You will explore atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques, including vapor-phase infiltration (VPI) and sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), develop new compositions of organic-inorganic hybrid thin films, and study their applicability in lithographic patterning by electron beam and EUV. Collaborating with a broad range of researchers at CFN, NSLS-II, and other external partners, you will explore various advanced material characterization techniques and investigate the fundamentals of VPI and SIS, as well as the correlation among material properties, EUV photochemistry, and ultimate lithographic patterning characteristics. In this position, you will work under the supervision of Dr. Chang-Yong Nam (Electronic Nanomaterials Group).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will conduct the synthesis of new compositions of hybrid thin films suitable for EUVL using ALD techniques including VPI and SIS.

  • You will develop VPI/SIS parameters and protocols as required for targeted new hybrid photoresist compositions.

  • You will investigate the chemical and structural characteristics of synthesized hybrid photoresists and their impacts on electron beam and EUV photochemistry and patterning.

  • You will collaborate with researchers with a broad range of scientific expertise, including lithography, low-energy electron and soft x-ray characterizations, and other frontier material characterizations.

  • You will disseminate research findings via paper publications and external presentations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (fill-in required and preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • You have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related science or engineering discipline), conferred within the past five years or to be completed prior to the starting date.

  • You have demonstrated hands-on experimental expertise in ALD-based hybrid material synthesis techniques including VPI, SIS, or molecular layer deposition (MLD), as well as associated material and process characterizations.

  • You have demonstrated an ability to investigate and understand material/polymer chemistry by conducting various spectroscopic measurements such as those based on infrared, x-ray and so on (laboratory- and synchrotron-based).

  • You are committed to creative and independent research, teamwork, and fostering an environment of safe scientific work practices.

  • You are committed to cultivating an inclusive and respectful workplace environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • You have extensive knowledge of polymer and ALD chemistries and related concepts.

  • You have working knowledge of lithographic patterning and associated photochemistry.

  • You have experience in materials characterization and analysis based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and chemical characterization techniques (e.g., x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).).

  • You communicate effectively, both verbally and through technical writing.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Any information pertaining to the environment, health or safety requirements for a position that will be considered when evaluating a candidate.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • This is a 2-year Postdoc Assignment.

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a postdoc.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $68,400.00- $113,250.00/year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
