Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas invites applications for multiple full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates to support multidisciplinary research on (1) repairing/retrofitting reinforced concrete structures with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials and (2) computer vision-based inspection/monitoring of large-scale reinforced concrete structures. Highly qualified candidates with any of the following backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • Reinforced concrete structures, fiber-reinforced polymer materials
  • Experimental structural testing (large-scale), materials testing
  • Computer vision, structural health monitoring, drone-based inspection, and machine/deep learning
  • This is a 1-yr appointment with possibility of reappointment based on performance and funding availability. Preferred start will be in January 2022 or earlier. These positions involve working closely with faculty members and students on high-profile research projects related to repair and retrofitting of structures using fiber-reinforced polymers; inspection and damage detection in large concrete structures.


    Job Description

    80% - Research

    • Conduct and oversee laboratory and/or computational research.
    • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students with their research.
    • Train students on proper procedures and safety regulations for the laboratory.
    • Analyze data associated with conducted research.
    20% - Reporting and Dissemination of Research
    • Prepare and present updates on ongoing research.
    • Provide written reports on research progress.
    • Participate in group meetings and present seminars to scientific community.

    Position Requirements

    • Postdoctoral Research Associates must be able to relocate to Lawrence, KS and work on-site at the University of Kansas.
    • Some out-of-state travel may be required to conduct field work as necessary; travel is anticipated to be less than 4 weeks per year.

    Required Qualifications

    Candidates will be evaluated on their research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) CV and cover letter, (ii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iii) references, and (iv) interview by videoconference.

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.


    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fiber-reinforced polymers and their applications to reinforced concrete structures;
  • Experience in large-scale laboratory testing of structural components and systems;
  • Experience with computer vision and related applications in structural health monitoring;
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, such as machine leaning and deep learning, and its applications in civil engineering;
  • Robust record of publications and technical presentations.
