Job Summary:
This is the entry level of professional work requiring a Ph.D. degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. Incumbents perform routine scientific or engineering work, evaluating, selecting and applying standardized scientific or engineering procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives; assignments require investigation of a limited number of variables and few complex features. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives. For development purposes, assignments may include some work that is typical of a higher level.
Assist the principal investigator in all aspects of research including writing proposals, reports, and journal articles, and performing detailed structural and finite element analyses. The nature of the duties are such that they require knowledge of an advanced type in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent exercise of discretion and judgment. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
Essential Duties:
Perform applied research duties, including design, analysis, and simulation of various roadside safety and physical security systems. Plan, schedule, coordinate, and report detailed phases of research and development projects. – 65%
Assist principal investigator with coordination and management of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund group, including preparation of Webex meeting and proposal writing and review. – 25%
Assist principal investigator with communication and coordination with multi-disciplinary teams comprising of research staff, technicians, and support staff to ensure the completion of research objectives and timely delivery of high-quality project deliverables. – 8%
Other duties as assigned – 2%
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D.
No prior experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Advanced structural analysis
Proficiency with finite element analysis
Computer programming
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
Ability to think and work independently.
Ability to multi-task, work cooperatively with others, adapt to changing project requirements, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Ability to travel to conferences and out-of-state meetings.
Preferred Qualifications:
2 years experience during relevant educational programs
Executes experimental research tasks, including writing reports and developing presentations.
HyperMesh, Bluebeam Revu, SOLIDWORKS.
