What you need to know

  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent in this position will be required to be 100% in office.

  • The salary range for position is commensurate. Final salary will be determined based on the applicant's qualifications and experience.

  • This is a 12 month full time position. The position will be evaluated at the end of the 12 month employment period to determine continued employment based on program needs and funding availability from research contracts. If employment is extended a new offer letter will be provided at the time.

Job Summary:

This is the entry level of professional work requiring a Ph.D. degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to research projects and lead or participate in research proposals. The incumbent will focus primarily on processing and analyzing traffic monitoring data. The position requires strong background in big data analytics, statistical modeling, and machine learning methods. Continuation in this position is contingent upon availability of funding derived from research program or specific projects.

Essential Duties:

  • Processing, managing, and analyzing big data such as traffic volume and probe data. 30%

  • Applying and validating statistical and machine learning methods. 30%

  • Preparing technical reports, guides, and other research deliverables.20%

  • Preparing research papers and articles.5%

  • Managing project tasks, activities, schedule, budget, and resources.5%

  • Presenting research results to sponsors and other stakeholders at conferences or other events. 4%

  • Leading or participating in research proposals. 4%

  • Other duties as assigned. 2%

Required Education & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related field.

  • No prior experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in big data analytics, statistical modeling, and machine learning methods.

  • Good understanding of FHWA’s traffic monitoring guide (TMG).

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing big data and applying statistical and machine learning methods using R, Python, or other programming languages.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in R or Python.

  • Good understanding of GIS tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS.

  • Prefer good understanding of FHWA’s traffic monitoring guide (TMG).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform common office functions.

  • Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.

  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
