What we want

The postdoctoral research associate will lead a collaborative research effort to delineate new roles for mitochondria in innate immunity. Research projects will involve investigation of mitochondria as signaling organelles in the immune system and will explore innate immune and inflammatory responses in animal models of mitochondrial disease/dysfunction. Laboratory bench and computer work will be required.

Required Education:

  • PhD in a life or medical science discipline

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with cell biological methods and approaches

  • Extensive experience with laboratory animals is not required, but a strong desire to learn and become proficient in mouse husbandry and in vivo methodologies is required

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Experience working with individuals and communities

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, life or medical science discipline

  • Experience in a post-doctoral position or two years of related professional experience

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in immunology and/or cancer biology, with an emphasis on signal transduction

  • Prior experience with small animal husbandry and use in experimentation

  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses

  • Ability to communicate effectively, present data and perform other computer related tasks as directed by the supervisor

  • Detailed oriented

  • Outstanding record keeping skills

  • Familiarity with BSL2 research environment 

  • Strong publication track record

  • Ability to lead collaborative research endeavors

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Responsibilities:

  • Research - Conducts research that applies to the role of mitochondria in immunity and cancer. Experiments will exploit microbiology, microscopy, molecular biology, immunology, and cancer biology approaches. Experiments will be performed in BSL2 research environments and involve research on human and mouse cell lines and laboratory mice.

  • Data Analysis - Analyzes data, prepares statistical analyses and summarizes data for use in submission to journals and other scientific publications. Performs computer data entry and analysis using statistical software.

  • Scientific Writing - Works with the Principal Investigator to prepare and submit competitive research proposals for funding from private, state, and federal granting agencies, including American Cancer Society, NIH, CPRIT. Seeks out opportunities for funding related to cancer biology, immunology, and/or infectious disease. Responsibilities also include writing, submitting and publishing manuscripts in high impact journals as well as presenting research findings at international scientific meetings.

  • Mentoring and Administrative - Mentors trainees in the laboratory, ensure proper research compliance and biosafety practices are followed. Trains other research support staff and provides oversight for management of laboratory functions such as safety issues, inventory, ordering supplies and equipment, and general lab clean-up.
