The Geochemical and Environmental Research Group (GERG) is a center of excellence in applied geosciences within the College of Geosciences of Texas A&M University. GERG, founded in 1981, focuses on applied interdisciplinary research in the ocean and environmental sciences. As part of GERG's mission in education, graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to interact with GERG's scientists and staff in their study and research. Students at GERG are mentored and advised in their study and research in many areas by the staff and scientists at GERG. What We Want

The Geochemical & Environmental Research Group (GERG), Texas A&M University, is inviting applications for our Postdoctoral Research Associate position. This position offers a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and talented researcher to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of coupled data assimilation. The successful candidate will join our interdisciplinary research team to develop an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF)-based coupled data assimilation capacity for the DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and the regional version of the Community Earth System Model (R-CESM), and then investigate with the systems on improvement of sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction with coupled data assimilation. What You Need to Know

Salary Range: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire's experience.

Work Schedule: Ability to work nights and weekends as needed by specific projects and to produce contract deliverables and products.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate in Ph.D. in atmospheric and/or oceanic sciences or a related discipline with a focus on data assimilation and numerical modeling

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Robust expertise in coupled earth system modeling and/or proficiency in data assimilation methodologies

  • Mastery of contemporary programming languages, including Fortran, C/C++, MPI/OpenMP

  • Hands-on experience in a UNIX environment with advanced scripting languages, including MATLAB, Python, and Shell Script

  • Proven experience in executing numerical general circulation models on High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms

  • Demonstrated proficiency in analyzing and interpreting numerical general circulation models and data assimilation outputs

  • In-depth understanding of the physical and mathematical foundations of coupled/uncoupled numerical general circulation models, such as E3SM, CESM, WRF, and ROMS

  • Established a record of research excellence, showcased through publications in peer-reviewed journals

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • Development and research on Ensemble Coupled Data Assimilation (ECDA) with E3SM and R-CESM: Works with PI to develop ECDA capacity with E3SM and R-CESM, calibrate the ECDA capacity to assimilate synthetic and real observations, operate the ECDA systems, analyze the data assimilation and model simulation outputs, and assess the improvement of data assimilation on climate prediction/projection.

  • Report/Manuscript Preparation: Produces scientific manuscripts to submit to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Produces project progress and data reports to clients and agencies.

  • Proposal Development: Works with senior scientists at GERG. Assists with proposal development and submission and performs other duties as assigned.
