Who we are

The Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics is one of four basic science departments within the Texas A&M University School of Medicine. Program strengths within the department include brain development, cellular/molecular basis of drug addiction, circadian biology, ocular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics, neurobiology of aging, acute brain and spinal cord injury models, and neurodegenerative diseases. 

What we want

The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to serve as a member of the GeoffroyiLab in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics, School of Medicine at Texas A&M University. The Postdoctoral Research Associate, under general supervision, conducts lab experiments, analyzes and communicates data in the form of primary research articles, aids in grant writing, supervises undergraduate students, and performs routine lab duties as required. The successful candidate will join a research lab focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved after spinal cord injury. This role will use major techniques of the laboratory including rodent surgeries and behavioral analysis, primary cell isolation and culture, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence & confocal microscopy, bioinformatics, and sequencing. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will lead 2 projects: 1) understanding how age impacts spinal cord injury and functional recovery, and 2) defining how gastro-intestinal complications occur after spinal cord injury.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate PhD

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Qualification:

  • PhD. in Neurobiology, Biology, or related fields

  • Experience in assessing gastro-intestinal functions

  • Experience in transcriptomics

  • Experience in drug screening

  • 3 years of experience working with small animal models of gastro-intestinal dysfunctions, neurological disease or trauma

  • Small animal surgeries, histology, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, cell culture, behavior testing, microbiome and metabolites analyses

  • Candidates should have excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills

  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and have excellent interpersonal skills

Responsibilities:

Experimental Research:

  • Perform mouse surgeries including colon and spinal cord injury surgeries.

  • Perform behavioral assessments of colonic activity in mice.

  • Perform colon and spinal cord histology and microscopy imaging.

Data recording and analysis:

  • Collect, record, maintain and analysis experimental/research data

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication of research results.

General lab duties:

  • Assist in managing mouse colonies, including breeding, genotyping, and recordkeeping.

  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
