Job Description Summary: This position of Postdoctoral Research Associate is in the Texas A&M University Department of Neuroscience, in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The successful candidate will join a research lab focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved after spinal cord injury, in particular gastro-intestinal dysfunctions. Major techniques of the laboratory include rodent surgeries and behavioral analysis, primary cell isolation and culture, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence & confocal microscopy, bioinformatics and sequencing, as well as electrical engineering techniques (particularly 1) system implementation using microprocessor and 2) Labview programming). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will lead a project focused on defining how gastro-intestinal complications occur after spinal cord injury. The main objective of this research position is to develop an optimized electrical stimulation system with the application phase optimized by deep reinforcement learning.

Required Education:

  • Appropriate PhD

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Education:

  • PhD. in Neuro-engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Neurobiology, Biology,  or related fields

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in neuro-engineering
  • Experience in assessing gastro-intestinal functions
  • Experience in system implementation using microprocessor
  • Experience in Labview programming
  • 3 years of experience working with small animal models of neurological disease or trauma.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in system implementation using microprocessor, Labview programming, small animal surgeries, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, cell culture, behavior testing.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Job Responsibilities

Experimental Research:

  • Create electrodes and electronics for neural recording

  • Perform mouse surgeries including colon and spinal cord injury surgeries.

  • Perform behavioral assessments of colonic activity in mice.

  • Perform colon and spinal cord histology and microscopy imaging.

Data recording and analysis:

  • Collect, record, maintain and analysis experimental/research data

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication of research results.

General lab duties:

  • Assist in managing mouse colonies, including breeding, genotyping, and recordkeeping.

  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants.

Other Duties.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
