The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to serve as a member of the Medical Physiology team. Required Education:

  • Appropriate PhD

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent understanding of all components of cardiac physiology.
  • Experience in: mouse handling; conducting ex vivo experiments; protein biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to initiate and complete research
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.
  • One year in scientific research, clinical, operational or experimental work

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in performing/conducting mouse echocardiography, in vivo mouse intra-cardiac pressure-volume measurements, mouse cardiac related survival surgery, extraction of intact cells and extraction of intact papillary muscle from mouse hearts, cell culture, flow cytometry
  • Knowledge in Fura-2 based intracellular calcium measurement

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform impact papillary muscle experiments.
  • Includes but not limited to harvesting hearts, carefully isolating the papillary muscle through dissection, mounting the papillary muscle in test chamber, performing necessary tasks to make simultaneous force and intracellular calcium measurements, and recording of data.
  • Perform cell culture on cardiac myocyte like cells derived from multiple sources.
  • Perform and read echocardiography as needed.
  • Perform necessary biochemistry tasks to include gel-electrophoresis & western blotting.
  • Perform survival surgery (trans-aortic constriction to induce heart failure).
  • Perform intra-cardiac pressure-volume measurement. Assist in design of experiments.
  • Perform data analyses.
  • Prepare data for presentation at scientific meetings and for manuscripts and grant proposals. 
  • Complete draft abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Travel to scientific meetings for oral or poster presentations.
  • Maintain lab and equipment, order laboratory supplies, coordinate day-to-day projects with research staff.
  • Other Duties as assigned
