Position Summary
The department was formed in July 2012 through the merger of the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology and the Department of Cell & Molecular Physiology. The new department brings together two strong traditions of excellence in basic science and translational research, and in pre- and post-doctoral training, including undergraduate, graduate and medical education.
Our lab studies the biology and pathophysiology of the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. Specifically we are interested in therapeutic approaches for rare genetic diseases caused by a primary defect in the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to study mechanisms of intermediate filament proteostasis and pharmacological approaches for intervention.  The project will involve studying the molecular, cellular and pathophysiological mechanisms of Giant Axonal Neuropathy using patient-derived iPSC-astrocyte and neurons, brain organoids, and rodent models of disease.
The position will require: working with rodent models of Giant Axonal Neuropathy; isolation of primary astrocytes and neurons; iPSC cell culture and differentiation; pharmacological studies using FDA approved libraries, kinase inhibitors, and novel intermediate filament targeting compounds; developing biochemical assays for intermediate filaments, assaying filament properties using confocal and electron microscopy on fixed cells/tissues and in vitro assembled proteins.
Educational Requirements
Candidate must possess a PhD, MD or MD/PhD.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidate should possess background and skills in cell biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, pharmacology and/or animal models of disease. Previous experience with iPSCs, gene editing and drug screening is desirable.
