Position Number F0142V
Position Title Postdoctoral Research Associate - Sediment Transport
Unit Mission Statement
The mission of VIMS is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service.VIMS’ strategic sections are committed to the development of resilient systems through a focus on three grand challenges, ensuring science for stewardship of:
1.Ecosystem Health: connecting physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic systems to address environmental and community vulnerabilities
2.Natural Resources: providing translational science for sustainable management of coastal socio-ecological systems, especially fisheries and aquaculture
3.Coastal and Ocean Processes: connecting global trends and local drivers to understand and address environmental change.
Position Summary
The sediment transport postdoctoral research associate conducts numerical modeling studies to explore the role that sediment transport plays on morphodynamics, contaminant exposure, and /or geochemical processes in environments such as the northern Gulf of Mexico shelf and estuaries; and / or other coastal waters. The postdoctoral scholar will join a project focused on sediment response to fairweather conditions and storm events, and will be expected to both lead independent modeling projects and work as part of a team that includes other numerical modelers. The postdoctoral scholar will join a team using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) coupled within the Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Waves Sediment Transport (COAWST) framework.
The responsibilities of the position also include interaction with other researchers, communication of research results, and development of independent research topics consistent within the goals of the sediment modeling group.
Required Qualifications
Education:
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in ocean sciences, earth sciences, or a related field, at the time of appointment.

Competencies/Experience:
  • Strong quantitative skills with numerical ocean models and / or other scientific programming.
  • Working knowledge using a LINUX platform, and FORTRAN, MATLAB, and/or Python.
  • Knowledge of estuarine, coastal or continental shelf waters.
  • Evidence of scientific communication skills.
  • Research experience within estuarine, continental shelf or coastal systems.
  • Experience in numerical ocean models and / or other scientific programming.
Preferred Qualifications
Competencies/Experience:
  • Familiarity with research and issues within the northern Gulf of Mexico or similar coastal systems.
  • Familiarity with sediment transport processes in macrotidal environments.
  • Knowledge of sediment transport and bottom boundary layer processes.
  • Experience with ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System), COAWST (Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Waves Sediment Transport) or similar numerical modeling frameworks.
  • Experience with sediment transport and biogeochemical components of ocean models.
  • Experience with interpretation of marine observational data.
