Postdoctoral Research Associate Neutron Production

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Upton, NEW YORK

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Accelerator division of the Collider Accelerator Department has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate position to study neutron generation using a lithium driver beam. The research focuses on simulation study of neutron production using compact accelerator- based neutron system (CANS), design study of a neutron moderator for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) and investigation of high duty factor accelerator design. These studies will be conducted in collaboration not only with researchers in BNL but also with researchers from other institutions including ANSTO, Columbia University and Institute of Science Tokyo. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monte Carlo simulation for providing epi-thermal neutrons

  • Experimental studies including RF accelerator operation

  • Experimental studies of neutron generation

  • Documenting research results and attending conferences

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Nuclear Physics, Accelerator Physics or related discipline

  • Experience in simulation study and hands on work

  • Research experience demonstrated through a record of publications in peer reviewed journals

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • GEANT4, PHITS or MCNP

  • CST or OPERA

  • Particle beam simulation code

  • Multiphysics simulation code

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $68400 - $90825 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
