Postdoctoral Research Associate - Molecular Microbiology

Position Summary

The Kutluay Laboratory located at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO is hiring postdoctoral researcher(s). Lines of research in the Kutluay lab include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Deciphering the non-catalytic function of HIV-1 integrase enzyme in virion maturation and conservation of this function across retroviruses.
• Roles of viral and cellular nucleic-acid binding proteins in HIV-1 replication including selective genome packaging, transport, metabolism of HIV-1 RNAs and sensing of viral nucleic acids.
• Post-transcriptional regulation of innate immune defenses.
• Alternative viral entry mechanisms utilized by coronaviruses. 

To study these processes, we employ cutting-edge next-generation sequencing-based methodologies in addition to tools of conventional molecular biology, biochemistry and molecular virology.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Designs and keeps a record of research experiments.
• Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
• Prepares and submits papers on research findings.
• Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
• Conscientious discharge of research responsibilities.
• Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
• Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
• Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material and reagents; or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
• Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
• Adheres to all applicable university policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in university laboratories remain the property of the university.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in microbiology or a related field.
• Experience in molecular virology, molecular biology and biochemistry.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity in programming skills is highly desired.
• Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and record findings.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
