Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Carbon and Composites Group in the Chemical Science Division (CSD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  In this role, you will focus modeling flow properties of multiphase polymeric materials and their additive manufacturing under reactive extrusion condition.  The team will develop and use high-performance computational techniques and data analysis tools to characterize interfacial structure, dynamics, and thermodynamic properties of polymeric materials.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop computational approaches and understanding that provides new insight into flow properties of architecturally controlled multiphase block copolymers
  • Conduct theoretical data analysis and provide insight into improving the properties of polymeric materials.
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Publish papers in key journals after intellectual property has been protected
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • In addition to these research responsibilities, the job holder will interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences
  • Experience in state-of-the-art high-performance computational techniques involving appropriate programming languages and electronic structure calculation packages
  • Skilled with MD simulation packages and strong background in data analysis
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
