Postdoctoral Research Associate - Institute for Experiential Robotics
About the Opportunity
About the Opportunity
The Institute for Experiential Robotics (IER) at Northeastern University focuses on the development of robots able to learn and adaptively execute autonomous behaviors from human partners and/or other robots. Experiential robotics identifies and studies use-driven research problems at the intersection of collective human-robot experience, including:

  • Safe and reliable manipulation of tools and objects
  • Machine learning for dexterous manipulation of novel objects
  • Bilateral learning in human-robot interaction
  • Robust inference of human intent
  • Advanced understanding of human movement
  • Secure and resilient autonomous systems
  • Personalized human-robot collaboration
  • Ethics of autonomous robots in support of humans
  • Adaptive robot navigation in human environments
  • Socioeconomic impact of collaborative robots on human work

Experiential robotics addresses these interdisciplinary research questions to advance the capabilities of autonomous robots to perform everyday tasks in collaboration with humans. Widespread adoption of autonomous robots in a broad range of human environments relies on robust robot performance and robots' ability to adapt to uncertainties inherent in everyday human experience, safety protocols, human comfort, and social factors.
Responsibilities
The primary duties of postdoctoral research associates at the Institute for Experiential Robotics include the advancement of the state of the art in theory and practice in designated research areas, the preparation and execution of experimental paradigms and experiments to test proposed approaches; preparation of scientific publications for dissemination of research results in scholarly venues; assisting the PIs with the preparation of scientific grant proposals for funding, lab management, and graduate student advising. Performs basic or applied research using existing theories and methods when appropriate, but also frequently takes the initiative to innovate when these are insufficient. Assists the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. Maintains the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete.

    Qualifications
Must have a PhD or equivalent, as well as expertise in scientific areas specified in the position announcement; be able to undertake full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. Strong theoretical foundations in at least two of the following areas are required: robotics, machine learning, human movement science, psychology, dynamics and control, cyber physical systems. Strong programming experience in at least one of the following is essential: Python, C++, Matlab. Experience in team-based software development and version control tools, such as GIT, are strongly desired. Excellent command of spoken and written English, as well as demonstrated ability to execute independent research that has resulted in high quality published articles in respected scholarly journals and conferences in fields relevant to this position description are also required. A minimum commitment of 2 years is desired from the candidates. Continuation and renewals, including possible promotion, depend on sustained excellence in meeting the duties and expectations, as well as availability of funds.
