This position resides in the Quantum Computational Science Group in the Quantum Information Science Section, Computational Science and Engineering Division, Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Under the direction of ORNL staff, you will develop approaches to simulate quantum states of matter on quantum computers as well as approaches to measure and verify their physical properties such as entanglement. Your work will involve collaboration with theorists and experimentalists from multiple institutions and will add to broader goals of developing predictive quantum simulation capabilities for the Quantum Science Center, a DOE National Quantum Initiative facility.

As the largest U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of translating science into innovative solutions for the nation’s greatest challenges in energy, environment, and security. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people with a vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). These qualities make ORNL a recognized workplace of choice in today’s driven job market.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop quantum algorithms for simulation of quantum states of matter.
  • Write and run software to assess quantum algorithm output and performance, using conventional simulations and quantum computers.
  • Write research reports and present results at scientific meetings.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience in theory or simulation of quantum systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in quantum magnetism or condensed matter physics.
  • Previous experience in quantum computing and algorithms.
  • Previous experience in scientific computer programming.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
