Position Highlights The primary responsibility of this professional will be participating in field, greenhouse and laboratory research, measuring greenhouse gas emissions. The individual will also participate in outreach activities. Research duties will include collecting soil, water, and plant biomass samples from the field, process them for analyses, run analyses, procure and organize research data, perform statistical analyses, and write brief study reports.

Duties & Responsibilities

Description

  • Conduct and coordinate appropriate laboratory and field research activities necessary for the successful completion of the project goals under the predetermined time frame.
  • Organize and procure all research-related information for efficient utilization and easy access to all project personnel and stakeholders, which includes data organization, data sharing, statistical analyses, and creation of timely reports with charts and graphs of results.
  • Develop and publish peer-reviewed research and extension manuscripts to disseminate knowledge and participate in scientific and extension conferences and meetings to share research findings with fellow researchers and diverse stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement learning objectives, curriculum, and training materials related to carbon and nitrogen biogeochemistry, and general soil health management for a diverse number of stakeholder groups, which will include utilizing all communication techniques such as mass media, Internet, etc. to disseminate relevant outreach education to clientele.
  • Creatively apply their knowledge, skills, and experience in environmental science, soil science, and other related topics to solve problems and deliver solutions for a diverse number of stakeholders. Participate in grant writing to fetch extramural funding to continue the research and extension activities.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • The ability to frequently lift/move/transport up to 50lbs. 
  • Required to work outdoors for extended hours, especially during summer when temperature is above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to develop and publish research reports, peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, and extension articles.
  • Ability to drive vehicles to rural and urban field research sites and work outside for extended hours.
  • Ability to learn new skills and motivation to work with agricultural stakeholders.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD upon hire. 
  • Experience in working with chemicals, mechanical and electronic instruments in a field, greenhouse or laboratory setting.
  • Experience with statistical software and handling large data sets.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with field and greenhouse experimentation.
  • Experience with soil, gas, water, and plant sample processing, and analyses.
  • Experience in running lab instruments traditionally used in a soil analytical lab.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analyses using software like R, SAS, JMP, Python or similar.
  • Experience in handling and organizing large, complex datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience in publishing scholarly articles.
  • Demonstrated experience in speaking at scientific conferences.
