Location Main Campus
Address Tucson, AZ USA
Position Highlights

The Department of Geosciences seeks a postdoctoral researcher who will work as part of a team to conduct research on structural geology and tectonics.

The fellowship offers a competitive salary. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on research while working closely with PI Dr. Jonny Wu. The primary role is to set up, equip, and conduct structural geology and tectonics experiments within a new ‘sandbox’ analog modeling laboratory at University of Arizona. These experiments will be compared to natural prototypes of structural systems found in the Andes and other orogenic systems (e.g. Asia, western North America), with emphasis on the implications for structural models needed for sustainable energy.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

  • Independently develop apparatus, setup, run, and analyze analog models of structural systems in a new laboratory. This may involve working with an engineer on design and procurement of modeling apparatus.
  • Comparison of experimental results to natural tectonic systems on Earth, particularly in orogenic systems.
  • The postdoctoral fellow may mentor early career researchers in laboratory techniques. This fellowship also provides the possibility to collaborate with teams from other academic institutions, further expanding the scope and impact of their scientific contributions. The fellow is expected to be in residence in Tucson, Arizona during their tenure, actively participate in seminars, and contribute to the broader intellectual community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Key skills include analog modeling techniques, seismic interpretation, 3D subsurface mapping, fold-and-thrust belts, section balancing and restoration, and scientific illustration.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in geoscience or a related discipline. The selected candidate must have a conferred Ph.D. upon hire.
  • Prior postdoctoral or industry experience is an asset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience in the energy industry and orogenic systems such as the Andes and India-Asia collision zone is a strong asset.
  • Experience in other structural modeling techniques and software (numerical, thermo-kinematic, and/or mechanical modeling) is helpful.
