Position Highlights

The University of Arizona is seeking two postdoctoral scholars for a fully funded research project on critical minerals recovery from copper mine tailings. The project is highly interdisciplinary and synthesizes geology, (geo)chemistry, extractive metallurgy, environmental science, and systems engineering among other fields. The successful applicants will carry out research into one or more of the following areas and liaise with researchers working in others: remote sensing; analytical mineralogy; applied chemistry or geochemistry; extractive metallurgy; and techno-economic analysis. Ability to structure and work with multidisciplinary datasets is strongly preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct laboratory- and/or field-based research into the content, speciation, and recoverability of critical minerals in copper mine tailings.
    • Work with faculty and staff engaged in research on project
    • Help supervise students in same.
  • May include one or more of field sampling; mineral and water compositional analysis; processing and analyzing remote sensing images; and conducting extraction experiments.
  • Help coordinate across multiple areas of interdisciplinary project, including communications and data management.
  • Lead in or assist with writing manuscripts, presentations, reports, and proposals related to the project.
  • Contribute to teaching in field of expertise, e.g. but not limited to contributing guest lectures, leading short courses and workshops, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a field relevant to tailings research, such as: chemistry, geology, mineralogy, extractive metallurgy, mining engineering, environmental science, materials science, chemical engineering.
  • Selected candidate must have Ph.D. conferred upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in or familiarity with the mining industry.
  • Experience structuring and working with large interdisciplinary datasets.
