Description
The McManamay lab at Baylor University is a highly interdisciplinary group, generally studying human- environmental interactions, particularly the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on aquatic systems and identifying solutions to balance societal demands with water and land resources. Among the research objectives is understanding the potential ecosystem stresses and socioeconomic vulnerabilities arising from future urban land expansion and infrastructure development. Other research objectives include understanding tradeoffs between socioeconomic goals and conservation objectives. To expand these lines of inquiry, the McManamay Lab at Baylor University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar or post-masters research associate with experience in land use modeling, geospatial analysis, and computational workflows. The successful candidate will work with the PI, graduate students, and an interdisciplinary team of scientists with the Integrated Multisector Multiscale Modeling (IM3) Program (im3.pnnl.gov), including researchers from national laboratories and associated universities. The scholar is expected to contribute to the following projects: • Urban Dynamics: Model coupling, specifically downscaling global-scale processes to capture regional dynamics is a critical element of major collaborative experiments. Research will include developing modeling workflows to downscale global urban landcover to high resolutions to inform subsequent projections of urban morphology. Additionally, scenarios will be used to explore water infrastructure futures in relation to climate stress. • Anthropogenic Impacts on Biodiversity: this research includes understanding the future impacts and tradeoffs of renewable energies and urban expansion on biodiversity • Conservation of River systems: analysis that inform the development of environmental flows within Texas rivers, assessment of large-scale river fragmentation, and prioritizing river protection • Autonomous Biological Monitoring: Using machine learning and novel instruments (autonomous imaging) to identify and enumerate organisms and increase the rate o biodiversity discovery Scholars are expected to assist or lead technical components of the research, be scholarly productive, as well as co-mentoring graduate students, and collaborating on research proposals. Instructing and developing curriculum can be discussed if candidates are interested. The position is for 2 years (annual contract) with potential for extension and a preferred start date of Sept 2021. Salary is competitive and includes benefits. Moving expenses are also provided.
Qualifications
Requirements include experience with R and python programming language and ESRI (ArcMap) software.
