Overview:

The Electric Drive Research (EDR) Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position to conduct research on high frequency and high voltage power electronic systems including traction drive inverter and high-power EV charging. The successful candidate will be proficient in analysis, design, and simulation and hands-on evaluation of high frequency power electronics systems needed in electric vehicle applications. The candidate will also assist in hands-on fabrication and experimental evaluation of power electronics systems as well as contributing to the development of innovative power electronics designs for inverters and converters for various applications.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities.
  • Be knowledgeable in the fundamental concepts and principles of power electronics including pulse-width modulated (PWM) dc-dc converters including soft-switching implementation, high frequency resonant power convertors, high frequency magnetics, small-signal modeling, and control analysis of switched mode power converters.
  • Be familiar with the state of the art in power electronics technology, packaging of wide bandgap devices, and high frequency passive components.  Be well versed in various modeling and simulation tools.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
  • Contribute towards new proposals to internal and external funding agencies.
  • Develop presentations and written reports of research results, and present the results to sponsors and at meetings.

 

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics.
  • Experience with high frequency power electronics applications for electric vehicle application.
  • Knowledge of circuit simulation and mathematical tools such as PLECS, MATLAB, Saber.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support team building.
  • A publication track record in reputed peer reviewed publications.
  • Prior work experience with the industry will be valued for this position.
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity and safety is an important requirement.

Some travel will be required for this position.
