Job Description

Position Summary

The Foston lab in the Washington University in St Louis Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering is offering a post-doctoral position to investigate the heterogeneous catalysis of renewable feedstock using stable isotopically labeled lignin and carbohydrate model compounds and oligomers with a flexible starting date in early 2023.

Individuals will be required to work closely with the team members designing heterogeneous catalytic materials for the valorization of lignin or carbohydrates and using high-temperature and –pressure in-situ NMR to investigate heterogeneous catalysts of renewable feedstocks.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.
  • Motivated and independent with demonstrated expertise in multi-step organic synthesis, characterization using NMR and mass spec, and handling air- and moisture-sensitive reagents.
  • Strong understanding of organic mechanism and reaction troubleshooting.
  • Collaborative and team-focused philosophy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in structural determination and/or polymer synthesis.
  • Experience with scale-up chemistry and non-chromatographic separation science (although HPLC experience is an asset).
  • Experience with the synthesis of stable isotopically labeled compounds.
  • Previous experience in an interdisciplinary environment, or a strong interest in developing this experience.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
