The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Department operates OASIS - a facility for Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) studies of films and hetero-structures involving transition-metal oxides and other modern materials synthesized in-situ by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. The successful candidate will operate the ARPES module on the day-to-day basis; perform the ARPES studies within the OASIS research program and in collaboration with other members of the OASIS team; will perform ARPES measurements at NSLS-II and other beamline facilities as required; and will work collaboratively on the broader research program of the Scan Probe Microscopy Group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:     

  • Operate the ARPES module and lead the photoemission studies within the research program of OASIS.
  • Perform ARPES measurements on single crystal and thin film samples at synchrotron facilities as needed.
  • Participate in the current research program of the Scan Probe Microscopy Group.
  • Lead activities under the direction of a supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or related field.
  • An excellent understanding of the physics of strongly correlated materials is essential.
  • Experience with ARPES.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong data analysis skills and proven abilities for disseminating research by writing papers and giving academic talks.
  • Experience with MBE and/or STM.

BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $68400 - $113250 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
