Who we are

The Department of Oceanography is one of several departments in the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The Department of Oceanography is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, GERG, IODP, and Texas SeaGrant.  This alliance of Ocean Sciences represents a truly unique concentration of educational and research resources.  Our educational and research capacity is greatly enhanced by close ties to the College Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, and Geology & Geophysics, as well as the Berg Hughes Center,  and Texas Center for Climate Studies.

What we want

The postdoctoral research associate position is responsible for conducting high-resolution Earth system model simulations and analyzing simulation and observation data to understand climate change and its impact on weather extremes. The position requires advanced knowledge of climate dynamics and the use of the community Earth system model (CESM) on high-performance computing (HPC) systems, as well as analysis of big climate datasets. Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education:

  • Appropriate PhD

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge about climate dynamics, climate variability and change, and climate prediction

  • Excellent programming skills in Fortran, Matlab and Python

  • Ability to use high-performance-computing (HPC) systems

  • Excellent oral and writing communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, and/or Climate Dynamics

  • 2-year experience in high-resolution climate modeling and data analysis

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge to use the community earth system model (CESM) in various PHC environments

  • Knowledge to use large climate datasets, such as Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) datasets

Responsibilities:

  • Research - Conduct high-resolution CESM simulations. Analyze CESM simulation datasets and other climate datasets. Synthesize scientific results for journal publications and conference presentations.

  • Communication - Write scientific papers for journal publications. Present scientific results at national and international conferences. Participate and communicate scientific ideas with other team members. Assist PI to prepare project reports and conference presentations. Perform other duties as assigned.
