Position Summary
The ENDEAVOR Research Cluster within the University of Memphis FedEx institute of technology has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in soil science to work within a multidisciplinary team to study emerging AgriTech practice in the Mid-south. Specific areas of study for this position will include the ecology, evolution, and dynamics of soil with a focus on soil nutrient cycle and nutrient retention as a function of agricultural practice within the context of specific environmental conditions. The incumbent is expected to have experience in designing experiments and collecting and analyzing data. Grant-writing with other lab members is an important part of this position and dissemination of research information to clients through technical/non-technical publications and outreach is expected. The selected candidate will also collaborate on field experiments in collaboration with the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee in Jackson.
Minimum Position Qualifications
The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in Agronomy, Plant science, Plant physiology, Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering or a closely related field. Candidates who are currently obtaining a Ph.D. will also be considered, but the degree must be conferred by the time of hiring. Applicants should possess excellent academic and research performance records and strong oral and written communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong record of publications and grantsmanship for selection.
A focus of the ENDEAVOR research cluster is to understand the connections among agricultural practice, functional land use changes due to industrialization, and shifting climate and populations within the Mid-south region. The economic success of our region is led by two primary sectors – agriculture and manufacturing. The growth of the economy and the communities that support these sectors is defined by access to natural resources – key among them is our exceptionally high-quality groundwater and our excellent farming land. ENDEAVOR is establishing the capability to assist industry clusters in our region achieve sustainable economic growth while ensuring our natural resources are not degraded over time
Special Conditions
This is a 12-month appointment with the potential of extension contingent upon the continued funding of the grant and satisfactory performance. Initial screening will begin May 31, 2022.
The position is located within the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis, but a portion of the work is in direct cooperation with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture at the West Tennessee Research and Education Center in Jackson, TN and the candidate is expected to work within both locations.
