JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to conduct fundamental research in the area of environmental omics and geochemistry in the Macalady Lab (https://sites.psu.edu/macaladylab/). The postdoc will contribute to a funded, collaborative NSF grant “Metabolic Network Models for the Bioremediation of Acidic Pit Lakes” to W.L. Burgos, J. L. Macalady, and J. Sánchez-España. A successful candidate will have experience in the areas of metagenomics / metatranscriptomics, and aqueous geochemistry and/or microbiology. Responsibilities in this position will include generation and analysis of environmental omics datasets, providing support for the operation of microbial bioreactors, participation in fieldwork (optional), and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate will be expected to prepare project reports, manuscripts, and research presentations in collaboration with team members and thus good technical writing skills are essential. Finally, it is expected that the candidate will work with their mentor to prepare and submit applications for external funding through appropriate fellowship and grant mechanisms. The postdoc will have the opportunity to join the Astrobiology Research Center (astrobiology.psu.edu) and/or the Microbiome Center (https://www.huck.psu.edu/institutes-and-centers/microbiome-center). The postdoc will be provided with mentorship and professional development opportunities tailored to their career goals. 

This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred candidates will additionally have some of the following strengths: 

·         Ability to conduct lab or field experiments with microbes

·         Experience using bioinformatic pipelines to analyze environmental sequence data and perform statistical analysis with R

·         A background in microbiology, biochemistry or aqueous geochemistry

·         Prior success in working with teams

·         An interest in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

·         A strong track record of peer-reviewed publication.

The Macalady Lab is located at the Penn State University Park Campus in central Pennsylvania in a walkable/bikeable community in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The geographic setting is one of agricultural valleys situated between tree-covered ridges with abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Biology, Geochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, or related field(s) before the effective date of hire.

This appointment is funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of reappointment for additional years conditional on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds.
