Position Summary:
Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a Mendel Science Experience Postdoctoral Fellowship within the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, in the area of human cognition. The position has a starting date of August 2024. Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2024, and the search will remain open until the position is filled.
The Fellows program is designed to enhance the College’s teaching of science to non-science majors through the Mendel Science Experience program and to foster the professional development of recent Ph.D. recipients on a career path leading to faculty positions. Positions are 50:50 research and teaching. The Fellow will conduct research in collaboration with the faculty mentor (Dr. Irene Kan) and will have opportunities to supervise student research. In addition, the Fellow will teach a laboratory science course for non-science-majors on “Neuroscience of Sleep” and develop undergraduate courses in psychological science and/or cognitive neuroscience. Initial appointment is for two years, with a third year possible by mutual agreement between the fellow and faculty mentor.

The successful candidate will join the Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory Lab (PI: Irene Kan, Ph.D.; http://www05.homepage.villanova.edu/irene.kan). We use a combination of behavioral (experimental and survey) and neuroscience (fNIRS, structural MRI, neuropsychology) methods in our investigations of human cognition and sleep-related behavior. The Fellow will work with graduate students and will have the opportunity to supervise undergraduate students in the lab. The Fellow will also have the chance to participate in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborative projects on a range of topics, including driver performance, perceptions of disability, gait analysis in older adults, and health disparities. Finally, the Fellow will be provided with a research budget ($4,000/year) to supplement resources available in the lab and the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences.
The successful candidate will also gain formal teaching experience, including team teaching a Mendel Science Experience lab course with the mentor and developing their own courses in the Fellow’s area of expertise.
