General Notes

This position is a temporary (one year) training position that may be renewed annually, depending on funding, annual performance review and the progress made toward research goals.


Purpose

A Postdoctoral Scholar position is available in the labs of Professors Desiderio Kovar and Michael Cullinan in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. This position will focus on developing a hybrid or a convergent additive manufacturing process that is capable of embedding micro-scale sensors into parts as they are being manufactured. Specific research topics will include (a) using micro cold spray to deposit patterned films of metals and ceramics to produce the sensors and readouts, (b) using powder bed fusion to produce the metallic parts, (c) characterizing and testing the materials, sensors, and parts that are produced. Responsibilities

  • Design equipment used for additive manufacturing of metals and ceramics

  • Perform micro cold spray of metals and ceramics to produce sensors and associated readouts

  • Manufacture parts using powder bed fusion

  • Characterize and test materials and parts that are produced


Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline received within the past 3 years. 

  • Demonstrated experience with additive manufacturing of metals and/or ceramics. 

  • Experience or familiarity with one or more of the following: design of experimental equipment utilized in additive manufacturing, familiarity with additive manufacturing processes used for metals and ceramics, and knowledgeable about the use and analysis of materials characterization equipment. 

  • Ability to work well with cross-functional, and varied teams. 

  • Ability to manage and lead research projects in a multi-disciplinary team.  


Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: powder bed fusion of metals, design of manufacturing equipment, knowledge of film characterization tools and techniques. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


Salary Range

$56,484 + depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • May work in standard office and in laboratory conditions where metal and ceramic powders are used and characterized.


Physical Tasks

  • May require repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation

  • May require use of manual dexterity

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
