Position Summary

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Science, Communication, and Tobacco Control.

We are seeking up to three full-time postdoctoral fellows for behavioral research on tobacco control.

(1) Fellowship 1 in Risk Communication and Uncontrolled Vaping: One NIDA-funded R01 project will develop e-cigarette warnings and study their impact on vaping. A second FDA/NCI-funded R01 project will study uncontrolled vaping and strategies for reducing uncontrolled use. The postdoc will support these studies while also pursuing their own research questions on ways to control e-cigarette use. The postdoc will join Dr. Noel Brewer’s Health Cognition and Behavior Lab, noelbrewer.web.unc.edu. All eleven of Dr. Brewer’s previous postdocs have obtained positions as faculty or senior scientists.

(2) Fellowship 2 in Youth Tobacco Prevention Communication and the Retail Environment: One NCI-funded project is developing and testing a new measure of perceived message effectiveness for youth tobacco prevention communication campaigns, and a second NIDA-funded R01 project is developing and testing novel vaping prevention messages for youth using both qualitative and quantitative approaches; both are led by Dr. Seth Noar. This postdoc will also work on the multi-university sponsored Advancing Science and Practice in the Retail Environment (ASPiRE) initiative funded by NCI. ASPiRE’s goal is to build a rigorous, scientific evidence base for effective tobacco control in the retail environment to reduce the public health burdens of tobacco use, including tobacco-related cancers and tobacco-related disparities. The postdoc will work on studies related to policies regulating the sales and marketing of tobacco products at retail outlets along with their own tobacco control questions with Drs. Kurt Ribisl and Shelley Golden.

The salary is $55,000 to $60,000 per year plus benefits. The positions start between December 2020 and June 2021 and are for 2-3 years. Postdocs will receive support in developing a federal grant proposal, funds for travel to 1-2 conferences a year to present their research, and ongoing mentoring.

Applicants should submit: (1) a cover letter indicating the position/s they are applying to, the date they are available to start, and three references; (2) a curriculum vitae, and (3) a one- to two-page synopsis of their research interests, including a brief description of their career plans. We will review applications on a rolling basis.
