Position Title:
Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Family Group:
Professional Staff
Job Description Summary:
A position is available for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Candidates will work with Dr. Russell Swerdlow, the KU ADRC Director. The Swerdlow laboratory is interested in mitochondrial biology and the role of mitochondrial biology in Alzheimer’s disease. Current projects focus on these areas: [1] the origin, basis, and causes of Alzheimer’s disease mitochondrial dysfunction; [2] the consequences of Alzheimer’s disease mitochondrial dysfunction including relationships to plaque, tangle, and apolipoprotein E biology; and [3] the manipulation of mitochondrial function to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
A reach objective is to transition the fellow towards a faculty-level position, through which the candidate will establish an independent research program that advances research into mitochondrial biology and its role in Alzheimer’s disease. This objective is contingent on obtaining mentored grant support. Therefore, in addition to a background in fundamental metabolism/mitochondria research and an interest in Alzheimer’s disease research, an ability (or the desire to acquire the ability) to develop and write grant applications is preferred.
Additional career training and development opportunities will be provided through the KU ADRC’s Brain Health Training Program (BHTP). Through the BHTP program, the fellow will have access to an integrated and comprehensive research training environment for the study of brain aging and dementia. The BHTP pipeline provides opportunities for the fellow to develop mentoring skills, collaborative science networks and advanced research skills.
