Position Overview
The position will focus on research in agronomic management of irrigated culinary yellow, oriental, and brown mustard grown for spice, by conducting field studies to evaluate the optimal seeding rates, nutrient rates (nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, copper, manganese, boron, and zinc), and nitrogen application timing. The candidate will also conduct herbicide tolerance and weed control trials. The candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the mustard trials that includes, collecting data, processing samples, and working with the PI’s to draft manuscripts for publication. Recommendations for nutrient management, crop yield and spice quality, weed control, and economics will be disseminated to stakeholders through grower meetings, field days, popular press articles, and Extension bulletins.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Experience with written communication skills producing high quality peer reviewed papers.
  • Experience presenting at professional meetings.
  • Experience summarizing and interpreting experimental data showing analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience using computer software and applications for statistical procedures, word processing, and scientific graphics programming

Required Education
  • Ph.D. in Soil Science, Crop Science or related degree

Required Other
Additional Preferred
  • Experience with relevant research background and attention to detail.
  • Experience with soil fertility, plant nutrition, and weed management.
  • Experience designing experiments and analyzing the results. Experience using regression analysis and ANOVA with repeated measures.
  • Experience using lab equipment including scales, NIR, and CNS analyzers (e.g., Elementar Cube), and colorimetry (e.g., SKALAR San++).

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to drive and perform work with a truck.
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel and work in outdoor conditions to collect samples.
Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of application
