Position Overview
The Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Department and the Rural Studies Program at the University of Idaho invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research & Extension Associate position. This is a full-time, twelve-month appointment for one year, with very good chances of renewal subject to funding.
Unit Overview
The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology provides education, research and Extension programs, with particular focus in agribusiness, marketing, trade policy, production agriculture, natural resources and community development.
Funding This position is contingent upon the continuation of work and/or funding.

Position Responsibilities


Key Accountability Extension:
Job Duties
  • Producing e-commerce online courses that offer entrepreneurs the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to expand their sales using online venues.
  • Offering workshops and presentations to help workers and entrepreneurs to adapt to the digital economy.
  • Produce Extension bulletins, podcasts, and other Extension products to enhance understanding and increase awareness among stakeholders of the various policy options and best practices to promote sustainable development and maximize the benefits from e-commerce, remote working, and the digital economy.
Key Accountability Research:
Job Duties
  • Conducting policy-oriented research on digital economic issues affecting minority entrepreneurs and workers.
  • Writing peer-reviewed journal articles and publishing them in appropriate refereed academic journals of the highest possible quality.
  • Communicating research results via conference presentations, seminars, and extension workshops.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Strong competency in economic theory and quantitative methods.
  • Familiarity with econometric software.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in conducting research on topics related to community and regional economic development within a North American context.
Required Education
  • Ph.D. in Applied Economics or closely related disciplines is expected by the start of employment.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Additional Preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and implement extension and outreach programs based upon applied research, and publish in extension, popular press, and other relevant outlets.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement research programs in digital economic or community economic development issues, leading to effective economic problem-solving and scholarly publications in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Demonstrated excellence in econometrics.
  • Practical knowledge of Stata.
  • Practical knowledge of working with rural residents and community leaders.
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of current trends in e-commerce, remote working, broadband access, and other digital economic issues affecting rural communities.
  • Ability to work in collaborative partnerships with disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to interact effectively with constituents and client groups, such as community leaders, businesses, policymakers, non-profits, and the general public, including those with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to read and write fluently in Spanish.
