Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology (EGSB) Division is looking for a talented Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Yoshikuni Group to develop genome engineering tools to help enable self-driving design-build-test-learn (DBTL)-cycle for strain engineering and development. The Yoshikuni Group will first target model chassis such as E. coli , P. putida , B. subtilis , and S. cerevisiae and CO2 fixation pathways as model pathways.

What You Will Do:

  • Extend the utility of the CRAGE technology to help enable the self-driving DBTL cycle.
  • Genome mining to identify genes for efficient CO2 fixation.
  • Use robotics (e.g., biolector, robolector, vantage) to build a self-driving DBTL platform.
  • Perform adaptive laboratory evolution, sequencing, sequencing data analysis, and AI/ML-based phenotype-genotype correlation studies.
  • Summarize experimental results and present them at group meetings.
  • Keep precise and detailed laboratory notebooks.
  • Manage relationships with our collaborators.

What is Required:

  • A recent PhD in Biochemistry, Microbial Metabolic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Microbial Biochemistry, Genetics, Metabolism, and Physiology.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (molecular cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis).
  • Experience utilizing bioinformatics tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize/present technical reports and provide a proven track record of recent or pending scientific publications.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.

What We Prefer:

  • Experience in coding (e.g., Python, MATLAB, and/or R).

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes with predetermined postdoctoral step rates dependent on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be performed onsite at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
